  • Didi Vanh

As for the enclosure outside: he will get out easy :) one block is not going to stop them. Our two greek babies like to escape by digging under the border, while the adult greek ladies are climbing experts. I first had 30cm height (wood panels) , she got out of that within a week. It's like a lion in the zoo, patrolling the boarder to find a week spot and escape! So now i have 45cm which seems to do the trick (for now, fingers crossed as they are not fully grown yet) I will bet you she will try to get out to go and hide under those bushes next to her inclosure :-) be carefull using a heavy border like that, is it stable or dug in cuz they are little tanks and if something is NOT really stuck, they WILL move it!

If you are worried the best thing you can do is weigh him every 2-3 weeks. Like ALL animals this is the easiest and most reliable way to know something is wrong before you start seeing fysical signs. During summer his weight should go up steady, during hybernation you don't want to see any drop under 5-10% bodyweight (depending on size). If you notice the weight drops you wake them up and don't wait for spring. In normal circuimstance there is no need for this, but please don't check him every couple days while in sleep, leave him be and only disturb to weigh every couple weeks (takes no more than 2 minutes). We have 3 Greeks, we wake them around mid April. First 24 hours leave them alone with just water. It takes them some hours to wake up and by end of first day they are all under the light, relaxing. Next day is bath time and first feed (also cucumber/tomato, something with lots of water), day 3-4 i add leafy greens while downsizing the watery veggies. Day five no more crap food and leafy greens only, another bath. By this day i need to be sure they are actif, eating well and pooping normal. If this goes well they move outside after their check-up week and the new year starts again. I keep track of their weight every 3-4 weeks (summer) and while doing this i also check the nails, look if the eyes are clear, beak to long or not, stretch legs without issue, look for problems. In winter i only check the weight and a quick visual every 2-3 weeks. As i do this so often, it is very easy to know when something is off or not.

We had a tortoise pet at home for almost 20 years, my sister found it somewhere in 1987. He was only outside and went to his winter sleep in a pile where we put grass when we cut it all year, like a compost something and nothing was wrong. Then around 2006. we got a samoyed and i guess during tortoises winter sleep he digged him up and in the spring we found just half of his skeleton :( So just let him be during his winter sleep, he's gonna be fine on his own.

Hey Petko, you should start soaking your tortoise at least 3 times a week until you let him wander outside. It gives him time to rehydrate and use the bathroom and soak hydration into his skin. PLEASE PLEASE REMEMBER TO SOAK HIM FOR AT LEAST 20mins In a container with water that comes to the top of his bottom shell. And feed him ALOT more greens instead of all the fruits and veggies.

I did a similar outside enclosure for a tortoise and it had no problem what so ever climbing out. I had to resort to cinderblocks with a decorative overhang on the top to finally make it escape proof. One day Sherman was being ruthlessly attacked by magpies and I had to move him inside to a smaller but safer location. June will be his 18th birthday.

It’s so awesome to see the little guy again!!! Also, I have a few suggestions for your yard. Firstly, I love that you want to have a wild portion. The world needs more meadows filled with insects and reptiles! I would also suggest, if you have the space, a small pond or a few native trees. There are many native plants that are edible, and they tend to grow better than most non-native garden plants.

Cute Tortoise,I used to have a pair of spur thigh tortoises. The water bowl should be big enough for them to sit in comfortably. They love rocket and dandelion leaves and nasturtiums, plant plenty in ur garden, super cheap and easy to grow. Also, chopping things up really small makes it harder for them to eat, they’re designed to eat by tearing small bits off bigger items that they can hold down with their fore legs.Sorry,if u know all this.I really enjoy ur videos and ur passion for animals.I miss having exotics at home.

I have only ever hibernated a hedgehog, but when we did we left them in hutches outside with water and a bit of food, so if they woke up at all on a warmer day they would stretch their legs, eat, drink n go back to bed. I have no idea if tortoises do that, but 8 does look great, tortoises n hedgehogs are different little beasts and the hedgehogs are native to where I live.

Pepco, those bricks are nothing for a tortoise to climb, use a barrier that's about at least 20 centimeters tall. Also make sure it goes at least 10-15 centimeters deep underground, because tortoises are great diggers. Ideally it would be a good idea to cover the entire thing with a net or something to protect him from cats, rats and other animals, he's still relatively small and vulnerable. Another thing is, I don't know how regularly do you feed him veggies, but they really aren't a good food for tortoises. Although they're good as vitamine and sugar supplies, their fiber composition is not what torts are meant to ingest. You should feed him almost exclusively fiber-rich wild greens such as dandelion leaf, clovers, medicks, fleaworts, lamb's lettuce etc.

Petko - You should check out Clint's Reptiles and Kamp Kenan here on PLtoolss - they both have a bunch of videos about turtles and tortoises that might help with some of the questions you've asked here. Also - I would make sure your backyard is VERY secure, as they can climb and dig better than most people think.. I would also make sure he has somewhere safe to hide, especially at night, as a lot of predators can kill turtles/tortoises...

  • L Harding

Glad to see 8 is back! :-D Not an experienced reptile keeper myself or anything, but I'm that for snakes at least, it's not necessary to brumate them unless you're planning to breed them. Is it different for tortoises? Just wondering since it sounds like you'd rather not brumate him if you didn't have to.

  • Mátyás Kassay

    Mátyás Kassay

    Miesiąc temu

it's not necessary, I didn't brumate mine yet and he's 5 years old now. But it's still more natural and healthy. Not brumated torts can develop growth problems more easily, so you have to be extra careful with their care. And yes, it's necessary for adults if you want to breed them.
