Having worked at a Petsmart, they don't really care about proper care for animals. They care about sales. I took it upon myself to learn about the animals we sold so customers could make an informed decision. However, if a customer INSISTED on buying 20 goldfish and a small bowl... we had to do it for them. Because $$$

By the description that PetSmart had. WIth the under tank heater, PetSmart was actually endangering the Tarantula. The Tarantula would have gotten dehydrated & eventually die. To PetSmart it is to keep selling you crap (a new animal & the supplies). PetSmart don't care if the previous animal they sold you dies. They just want you to keep buying. Plus, PetSmart's instructions sounded like it would stress out the tarantula more than do it any good. Once a month enclosure changing? Ugh! That would definitely stress the Tarantula out. You only need to change the enclosure environment AFTER the Tarantula MOLTS. To a new larger enclosure. I don't own tarantulas because I have cats. Pretty much to keep my cats safe. Tarantula, like snakes, are unpredictable. That is the only thing that IS predictable about the tarantula is their unpredictability. LMAO... So always use caution in the care of a Tarantula.

Unfortunately, never listen to petsmart’s advice. Some associate may know something, but corporate persmart does not care about their animals nor providing the best care. For a good example also take a look at the reptile and small animal care guides. They are absolutely atrocious.

I'd never get a tarantula or any kind of arachnid, but if someone I knew brought up wanting to get one I'd suggest talking to people who have had arachnids or tarantula and the animals have thrived with them. Don't trust pet stores. They just want to make money.

I started keeping tatantulas in the mid 80s and most of the care info then was based on reptile keeping, which I had experience of. You would hope that 30 odd years later, companies were more clued up?! So yes, my first spiders were in huge tanks, with heat lamps! After finding the British Tarantula Society my collection grew and I started using heat pads, which were suggested back then by real tarantula experts, such as Andrew Smith. The small care guide that he wrote in 1986 mentions heat cables and pads. And anyone who kept tarantulas at that time probably had thermostats, rheostats and humidity meters?! My tanks were always dripping with water. And then we started to get African species in the hobby which didn't need high humidity. The hobby has changed but not the pet shops by the look of it?

I dont fully agree with the room temperture thing. Some weeks I feel good at 17C other weeks 21C. When youre used to low tempretures (example: when you work outside all day) you feel fine inside at maybe 15 or 16C while other people only feel fine at 24C. I would say keep them at 19-26C and youre good.

I'm trying to imagine the look on my vet's face if I brought my rose hair in for swollen joints!?! I have seen him treat farm animals, normal furbabies, a hedgehog once but really not sure if he could keep a straight face during the visit. On that note I currently have a problem with Hairyette. She molted successfully 6 weeks ago and won't eat yet. I look at the fangs when she hangs out on the walls of the enclosure and they look ok. She has always been a picky eater (crickets only). She has outgrown the large crickets sold by the petstore. I hate getting bait crickets because of the possible health issues it could pose. She won't eat horn worms, wax worms or dubia roaches. How long til she has to eat or how can I get her interested in feeding again? She is around 10 yrs old and would love to have her around atleast another 10!

Definitely can vouch for individual tarantulas having differing personalities. I bought a Hondurian Curly Hair tarantula _(Tliltocatl albopilosum)_ in part because I heard they were calm and even-tempered. Now guess who has a fuzzy little devil on her hands? Most of the time when I try to feed her she ignores the prey at first and tries to bite into my tongs (thankfully not in a way that hurts her fangs!) like Sorry hon you can't pierce stainless steel, you got the spirit tho try actually biting the mealworm

Ah, Petsmart....... Whenever I think of tarantulas, I think of Petsmart. I'm a recovering arachnophobe (your channel, among others, helped me, thank you!) and when I was a kid I was very scared of them, especially of spider webs. You know, accidentally put your hand on a web and the surprise EW GROSS reaction it gives you as a kid. As a kid, I was at a Petsmart once for... something for another one of our pets, I'm sure, and there was an employee doing something with a tarantula for sale, probably feeding it. In an effort to show how not scared I was of it, I said something like "wow, imagine how big a web that thing would make." And the employee responded... "Oh it's okay, tarantulas don't make webs." ... I could SEE the web RIGHT THERE in the display, but tarantulas don't make webs, got it. As a 6 year old I was so confused ("Did they make a fake web for it because it can't make its own??") and now as an adult I just... laugh. The sheer lack of training they give their employees... it's one thing if you're just hired to sell the merchandise but if you're taking care of the animals, you need to know what the hell you're doing!!

We actually do print off our own customized care guides, because we know that the corporation provided one isn't adequate and gives bad advice. We also have a season tarantula keeper that works here too so he's pretty knowledgeable and helps everyone know the correct way to care for them! This is one thing that unfortunately the associates and managers cannot control and its all run by the home office on a case by case basis :( I am hoping in the future this corporation decides to change their current information with new and correct information. And its not just the tarantulas that have incorrect info in their care guides :(

I'm surprised that you are surprised by the misinformation from Petsmart. Just about every pet store and online caresheet is flat out wrong. This video reminds me of at least half of the threads on Arachnoboards. Tarantulas are literally a couple steps above a pet rock! I can whip up a caresheet right now: 1. Coco fiber 2. No more than 2x diagonal legspan (DLS) of vertical space for terrestrials, extra vertical space for arboreals if you choose 3. Something dark and sturdy to hide in 4. Full water dish 5. Room temp (anywhere from 70-95F) 6. One meal every 2-4 weeks 7. If it's on its back, leave it alone for a week. Then pull the molt out, take a picture of it on your face, and text it to your mom. Treat most tarantulas like this, and they will live a long and healthy life! This is exactly what I do for all 20 species I currently own. Haven't heard from my mom in while, though:/

Yes sir, you are correct, a standard 10 gallon aquarium is way to big for a Rose Hair.. But not just because of it's size, also the height is way to much. If they climb to try and scurry across the top, which a lot of species will do, they could easily rupture their abdomen from that fall. A 10 gallon would be big enough for the largest T's, bird eaters and what not.. You might also consider putting a bunch of substrate in them and dividing it in half, maybe even quarters, to put 2-4 heavy diggers (fossorial) in there.
