You weren't neglecting him and you were providing him with what he needed. That particular hamster was destined to die. There's always going to be some runts that just can't thrive and genetic issues that arise. It was beyond your control, buddy

After experiences I have had in getting hamsters over the years I am careful to get older ones. The younger ones I have gotten all got sick in one way or another. Usually the young ones are snapped up quickly. I mean I can’t blame anyone as they are ridiculously cute. They often have not been at the shop more than a day or two. So they have been separated from momma and transported to a store then sold again and transported to a new home. It is just too much for their little systems! Once I started being careful to choose ones who had been at the store closer to a month they have been so much healthier. My latest is over 2 years old and happy + healthy if a little slower than he was when I got him. 🤪 That is getting way into the senior years for a hammie!

Honestly unfortunately picking the smallest hamster often although it's super cute it's not exactly the best choice, Smaller rodents and the runts of their litters are signs of failure to thrives, depending on the severity of the issues they can live anywhere from 1-3 weeks to 1-3 months, It's likely nothing that you could have done would have saved him, unfortunately it's just a matter of life In mice breeding atleast (my speciality) a breeder who keeps on ffts are really unethical, even worse that you'd sell one on, A biiig big red flag was that the person you got him from didn't know his sex, you can sex rodents from day one, with hamsters it being best to wait until they're older however the males simpley do not have nipples it's really easy to sex

I just found you in my related section and I loved what you said about small enclosures and not getting a pet that you can't properly provide for. Latte was so stinking cute. The little stretch he did in his intro video... ugh my heart. Then I saw this video. I know I am late to the party, but I am so sorry. I'm sure it wasn't anything you did and he was cared for and loved in his short time on earth.

I’m truly glad you showed us this. I’ve been researching getting a hamster for our family, I just watched you get him right before watching this one and this was very very informative and so intimate. I’m so thankful you are real and raw with your fans. It’s something I discussed with my son and let him know, hey this could possibly happen. I asked if he was prepared and he was honest with me and said no he would like to wait. So thank you very much for this video. ❤️

Please don’t let this stop you from getting another hamster. You know he was the runt and there is always a reason for that. At least he had 2 lovely well cared weeks with you. You should use each time an animal passes away as an other opportunity for you to adopt another animal so they can also live a good life like latte did xx

My first hamster was a rescue and also died within 2 weeks, he was sick and lethargic, I knew it was coming, but it was still hard. I have 2 hamsters now, that are doing great. I recommend you Roborovski hamster as they are super cute (small like your thumb), clean, amazingly fast, live long, however they don't like too much handling. One of the two the male was never really used to us, he will accept food from us but not petting or holding, at least he approaches us, the female she is very friendly and likes being held, but gets sensory overload after a while. They are wonderful, and I enjoy the different personalities they have. For sure hamsters are a challenge to keep, it's really surprising how bthis little animal can be complicated.

Unfortunately small animals can suddenly die... It is always hard, but the pain will leseen with time. You gave him a good home. Sometimes the breeders are not experienced, he could be sick, might have a mutation... You won't know. The important thing is the time you two spent together and memories you created.

Get another. I had a kitten die 3 weeks after I got it. Disease caught by the mom and her immunity was passed through the milk until he was weaned. It affected his brain. It was the only cat I got from a pet store - never again! But I got another kitten right away. She's going to be 20 (110 in cat years) in less than a month! Unfortunately they are very very delicate little creatures, and people breed them like crazy and inbreed them. Genetic issues take them so easily. Which is the worst because everyone gets attached instantly and always blames themselves. But as you said, you can’t kill them in two weeks like that. He had food, water, warmth and shelter. Everything he needed. Just an unfortunate shitty thing 😞

Sometimes they get something that is called "cage rage" and it isn't always an angry thing, sometimes it's because you got them too young and still need the companionship of the litter. It can happen with just a sudden change in home. I brought a couple of hammies home that my friend wanted them to go to the same place; they were both really nice to each other until I got them set up in a larger enclosure. One of them basically went crazy attacking the other whenever it came near, she never allowed us to handle her without gloves after that. She died shortly after. When we took her to the vet and told her everything that was going on, she said chances are she developed cage rage when she got her own territory and the stress of it caused her to have a heart attack. Hamsters don't handle stress very well at all poor babies 💔

Hamster breeder of 10+ years here. Please dont feel bad about your care, his set up looked great and it's obvious how much you cared for him. It looks to me like he had a cardiac or neurological anomaly, he looked quite underdeveloped and like he was failing to thrive. Almost all litters will have one, I keep mine with me and don't sell them. Sometimes they live for a year or two but often they pass as juveniles (by comparison my Syrians all usually live for 4-6 years) so I understand your heartbreak. Big hugs, RIP Latte xx

It definitely was not your fault, sometimes these things do happen with young hamsters and obviously the hamsters genetics. Stroke, seizures and more can happen at any point to them. You only had him 2 weeks you did everything well for him. it was something that you couldn't have helped sadly.

  • Andy Ford
    Andy FordMiesiąc temu

In the early 80s I had a hamster, Clyde, who lived for about 2 years. He had 4 different Habitrail (1 large) enclosures connected by tunnels, and 2 different wheels. The one in the large enclosure was probably just a bit too small, but there was another one, off by itself, that in retrospect was probably way too small for an adult. I found him one afternoon alive but paralyzed at his hind legs. head and front legs were ok. Not sure what happened, but your earlier video mentioning the small wheels made me think. It may have led to some spinal problems. But he did live 2 years. My dad had to put him down (and out of his misery) because I couldn't bring myself to do it. In my case I did get 2 years, not 2 weeks, but I understand your sadness. focus on the other things that bring you happiness and someday you'll be ready to return to your next amazing hamster.

Just think that you gave him his own little/big home and he was able to enjoy his short life way better than at a pet shop or any other place. You gave him a home, a playground, lot's if yummy food 😋 and he seemed to have a straight bond with you. He wasn't fearful of you, so he didn't have to stay in a new place, somewhere stuffed away and fearful of his owners. He sure had that connection with you and that bond and life, no matter how short it was should be celebrated! Make Latte T-Shirts, he deserves it and that way he'll always be remembered as well ❤

I had a friend in my area get a hamster awhile before me. She had 2 pet store hamsters pass away after like 1 or 2 months in a row. I went into getting a hamster with the expectation they would die quickly and or randomly, just really poor breeding from most pet store hamsters. I've looked into local places that are not pet stores and just don't have options (besides accidental pet store litters from poorly cared for homes). Get another hamster when you are ready.

If he was a pet store hamster, this is pretty common. Due to inbreeding and no attention given to genetics, many hamsters you'll find in shops end up with health issues. You could do the best you can for them, and they can still end up having heart or brain disorders and die suddenly. All of the domestic hamsters are inbred anyway, from three that remained from an original litter out of Syria that was used for scientific research. I would recommend looking for an ethical/reputable breeder. They will typically breed for longevity and know the ancestry of their animals, as well as health issues that have come up. You'll pay a little more, but you'll be getting a hamster that wasn't born in a stressful environment, had proper nutrition and care. So the chances of them living longer are higher. Although pet store hamsters can live a long and happy life, it's sort of a gamble in the end.

Unfortunately poor genetics are common in hamsters. I see this happen a lot in hamster groups on Facebook. Some people buy multiple hamsters back to back from pet shops only for them to pass away weeks later. Since Latte was so small he could have had internal anatomical problems that you wouldn't have known about. You gave him a good life, even if it was short. Take comfort in that.
